ACHIEVE YOUR FULL POTENTIAL AT SIU DERMATOLOGY
From the beginning, resident education has been the heart of SIU Dermatology. Our dermatologists are enthusiastic teachers and learners, and we endeavor to provide our residents with excellent and enjoyable training in medical dermatology, dermatologic surgery, pediatric dermatology, and dermatopathology. Responsibility and autonomy are advanced according to the abilities of the learner, such that residents are well-prepared for independent practice upon completion of the program. We pride ourselves on a collegial and supportive environment and continually strive to treat our patients with the same attention and respect that we would desire for our own families.
OUR PROGRAM IS GROWING
Historically, SIU Dermatology has always been a small, intimate program with 2 residents per post-graduate year. In 2018, however, our program was approved for 1 additional resident position per year, increasing our program size to 12 residents (including PGY-1)! We are excited for the opportunities this growth will provide, not only for incoming residents, but for existing faculty and learners within the system. Even though we will be slightly larger, we are committed to maintaining a familial environment and the close-knit ties between residents and faculty.
At SIU Dermatology, we constantly strive to adapt to evolving dermatological literature and learning styles. Residents are intimately involved in the planning of residency curriculum, molding the syllabus to fit the new generations of learners. At SIU, we are also working on understanding the real problems facing our patients and colleagues on a daily basis. In the last three years, we have constructed both a Dermatoethics curriculum that examines the ethical dilemmas that dermatologists face, as well as a Health Equity and Antiracism Learning (HEAL) curriculum that aims to dismantle systemic racism in medicine and dermatology through education of its providers. At SIU, we aim to not only nurture clinically competent dermatologists, but also empathetic and socially adept ones as well.
